This August, The Hermitage Hotel Nashville, a historic landmark for over a century, invites guests to celebrate the Women’s Suffrage Movement with a unique twist on its signature afternoon tea. In honor of this pivotal historical moment, the hotel introduces its Yellow Rose Tea, an experience that combines history, elegance and a touch of 1920s nostalgia, created by executive pastry chef Rebekah Leatherwood.

From Friday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Aug. 18, guests will enjoy a sophisticated afternoon featuring live music from the 1920s, a glass of Champagne, a yellow rose upon departure and a commemorative keepsake menu.

“As you step into our Beaux-Arts hotel, where French and Italian Renaissance influences blend seamlessly with a touch of modern charm, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an atmosphere of classic elegance,” says executive chef Richard Hutton. “Our setting, with its timeless grace, provides the perfect backdrop for this special occasion.”

This celebration highlights Tennessee’s crucial role in securing women’s right to vote. In the summer of 1920, The Hermitage Hotel, located just across the State Capitol, became the central battleground where pro- and anti-suffragists, legislators and lobbyists clashed in the lead-up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Throughout the historic struggle, famously known as “The War of the Roses,” anti-ratification forces wore red roses, and pro-suffrage campaigners donned yellow roses.

“This event is a tribute to the courageous women who fought for change, and we invite you to enjoy an afternoon where every detail, from the tea to the ambiance, celebrates their legacy,” says Hutton.

Recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its significant contribution to the Women’s Suffrage Movement, The Hermitage Hotel offers a themed experience that honors this legacy. Guests can indulge in cocktails named after suffrage leaders such as Carrie Chapman Catt and Anne Dallas Dudley.

“Each cocktail is thoughtfully designed to honor these trailblazers and their significant contributions, adding a modern and spirited touch to our celebration,” Hutton says.

The tea service includes an array of delicacies, such as cucumber herbs and crème fraîche sandwiches, vanilla orange buttermilk and rosemary cheddar scones and a selection of pastries like passionfruit cheesecake, salted caramel tart and vanilla rose macarons.

During her time as executive pastry chef at The Hermitage Hotel Nashville, Leatherwood has worked tirelessly to expand the destination’s dessert offerings, and her introduction of the hotel’s Yellow Rose Tea reflects her meticulous attention to detail and innovative culinary methodologies.

“Our Yellow Rose Tea offers a selection of teas carefully chosen for their flavor and character, each paired with a delightful assortment of tea sandwiches, scones and pastries," says Hutton. “Each item has been thoughtfully crafted to reflect the elegance of tradition.”
